ABOUT US

We rehearse two nights a week (Mondays principals & Tuesdays chorus) at Barn Hill Church Hall, in Stamford. Our annual production takes place in October.

Stamford Operatic Society was originally formed in 1905. Their first production was The Gondoliers, followed by a variety of other musicals and operettas. However, the passion to perform exclusively G&S was too alluring for many members, and so the Stamford Gilbert and Sullivan Players formed. The first production, HMS Pinafore, was staged in 1951, and we have been performing the G&S canon ever since.

We have won NODA awards for our recent productions of Patience, Iolanthe and The Sorcerer, and our group has featured on the cover of the NODA TODAY magazine.

MORE ABOUT US

In addition to our annual stage production we also aim to put on a concert or two in March.  In 2026 we performed our ‘Story of Gilbert and Sullivan’ concert at All Saints Church Oakham.  Written by our Director during lockdown, the show takes you on a journey through the G&S canon, with  well loved songs from the shows, full stage lighting, props, nostalgic photos from past and present and an entertaining narrative guiding you along.

In 2027 we have two concerts planned (13th March All Saints Oakham and 20th March at a venue to be announced).  These concerts will be a break from the "Story Of G&S" so watch this space for exciting updates.

You may also see us around Stamford in October , singing and  advertising Pirates of Penzance.  In December you may catch us fundraising and singing carols at Waitrose, Nene Valley Railway or Thetford Barn.
